WISC-V Coding

A low Coding score is a starting point for questions, not an explanation by itself. Consider visual scanning, motor output, visual-motor coordination, and attention alongside the referral question and observations.

These measures examine different skills and are not direct replacements for WISC-V Coding. Scores from different batteries are not interchangeable. Pathway relationships need review; confirm suitability in the manuals.

Visual scanning

Coding involves rapid visual scanning; a task with less motor demand may help separate scanning speed from writing speed.

WISC-V

Symbol Search

Needs review
What it adds
Visual scanning and processing speed with less writing.
Key difference
Same battery, but requires marking rather than copying symbols.
Age range

D-KEFS

Trail Making Test

Needs review
What it adds
Visual scanning, sequencing, and switching across conditions.

Fine-motor output

Coding requires rapid pencil output; motor dexterity may be worth examining directly.

Grooved Pegboard

Peg placement

Needs review
What it adds
Manual dexterity and speed without symbol processing.
Key difference
Pegboard task; no paper-and-pencil or symbol demands.

Visual-motor integration

Copying symbols draws on coordination of visual perception and motor output.

Beery VMI

Visual-Motor Integration

Needs review
What it adds
Visual-motor integration through form copying.
Key difference
Untimed copying of forms; not a speed measure.

Attention and response regulation

Sustained attention and response regulation can affect performance on timed tasks.

NEPSY-II

Auditory Attention and Response Set

Needs review
What it adds
Auditory attention and response regulation.
Key difference
Auditory rather than visual; examines attention, not speed.
Age range
